Tobacco Use: Identification, Intervention and Referral

Tobacco use remains the No. 1 preventable cause of death and disease in Oregon, killing 7000 people each year, and costing Oregonians $2.5 billion a year in medical expenditures and lost productivity due to premature death. This webinar will explore and identify opportunities for increased patient participation in tobacco cessation through evidence-based interventions. It will also included an overview of tobacco cessation counseling and how the referral workflow works. Lastly, this webinar will include information about the state provided Quit Line that was recently enhaced and the effectiveness of these services in supportiong tobacco cessation.

Participants will learn:

  • Interventions to help patients quit smoking
  • How to develop referral protocols to increase patient participation in tobacco cessation
  • The Ask, Advise, Refer (AAR) and 5A’s intervention and referral process including referral protocols.

Scott is the Health Systems Coordinator for the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention (HPCDP) section at the Public Health Division. He provides strategic direction for HPCDP health-systems-related efforts, including for the Tobacco Prevention and Education Program, which addresses tobacco use through coordinated programs and partnerships, and allegiance to rigorous data-driven and evidence-based practice. Scott has worked in public health for nearly 10 years in Oregon, Texas and throughout Central America.
