Motivational Interviewing to Improve Cardiac Health: Practical Applications

January 17, 2017 - 11:30am Source

Motivational Interviewing is an approach to patient-centered communication which focuses on removing barriers to change through eliciting and enhancing an individual’s own motivation to change. While at first glance it may seem that this is a technique which would require lengthy interactions not possible in most provider settings, it can be practically applied in a brief format during outpatient office visits, and has been demonstrated to lead to successful change in patients’ behavior which positively impacts health outcome measures. During this webinar attendees will learn about the practical applications of this form of communication, hear from providers who have successfully integrated motivational interviewing into their daily patient interactions, and examine possible barriers to implementation and practical ways of overcoming them.

Participants in this webinar will:

  • Describe motivational interviewing and how it can be incorporated into medical practice
  • Explore the mechanisms behind behavior change that results from motivational interviewing in relation to cardiac health
  • Discuss real success stories from persons using motivational interviewing in the field
